ORMS

I  welcome your child to my art class.  The year in art will be full of learning, effort and hard work, gratification, visual expression and "aha, moments!" Students will grow in "Art Smartness" every week and will leave with a portfolio of two-dimensional pieces, three-dimensional pieces and a sketch book full of practice and ideas at the end of the year.  Students will develop art-making skills and learn to think like artists, coming up with ideas from many different sources.  Students will work within guidelines of concepts taught, but emphasis will be given to each student creating his/her own unique individual work of art.

The Art TEKS will be the foundation for lessons and concepts taught.  The four major domains are:  Perception, Creative Expression, History and Culture and Evaluation.  These elements will bring depth and expanded art knowledge to my students and will help them be more aware of art, its significance and influences in our world.

Requested Art Supplies for ART 1

Please have the following items turned in within by Monday, September 17, 2018. Having these supplies leads to immediate success and pride in art class for your child.  As soon as your child brings the sketchbook he/she will start to use it instead of loose paper.  Those who do not bring a sketchbook need to come to tutorials and create their own sketch book.  Students keep sketchbooks in their backpacks and have them every day for class. Please be sure when purchasing your child’s sketch book that it can fit in their backpack.  The best size is 9”x12 with at least 100 pages.

  1.  SPIRAL sketch book approximate size:  9”x12” (no smaller please.) At least 50 pages.  Hobby Lobby has on-line coupons and plenty of sketchbooks. Non-spirals fall apart and create a mess, please get a SPIRAL.  Students will most likely need a second one the second semester if they get only 50 pages. Please do this at home ahead of time if you can:  Use permanent marker and write student’s first and last name and art period on the FRONT of the sketch book (even if the surface is black)

  2. Baby wipes:  one package (for oil pastel clean up)

  3. 2 Poster boards: any colors you choose, except black.  Full poster board size:  22”x28”. Label them with your name and period along the edge with letters no taller than an inch. This will ensure that the student gets his/hers back when passed out to use.
  4. Ink pen, ballpoint, etc. in blue or black ink....not a Sharpie.
  5. 1 package of crayons...Crayola or Prang brand please.
  6. 1 package of #2 pencils
  7. Your own portable personal pencil sharpener to keep in your backpack
  8. 1 glue stick
  9. 1 box of tissues
  10. A rock, no smaller than your fist; no larger than your whole hand. Write name and period

Due to lack of space in the art room these items are combined and shared when needed for assignments.  The only things that need a name are:  sketchbook, posterboards, personal sharpener and the rock. Thank you for your support.

Successful students come to school prepared each day ready to work and learn.

Charleen Watson Art Teacher, Art 1, 2 & 3

Dear Parents

I am delighted that your child is in my art class. Students will participate in many exciting and rewarding art experiences. Each child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his/her growth and I know that together we can make this process successful.

Students will have daily ART SMART warm-ups and will draw, paint sculpt, collage, look, discuss, read and write in art on a regular basis. There will be a lot of sketch book work for exploration, investigation and practice of ideas, media, techniques and notes. Most grades are daily/participation grades and there are projects graded via rubrics. Students will work with a variety of media in creative expression, making works of art, learning about the history/culture of master artists, learn the art elements/principles to heighten their perception and will experience evaluating/judging their works of art and the works of other artists. Attendance and tardies are in compliance with ORMS policies. Being present in class enables the student to be in sync with every building block of the creative process, so regular attendance is important.
