This course focuses on developing the five components of reading:
phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
Research-based methods are used to increase reading skills in
individually targeted areas to build reading success.
This course is non-graded.

I respond to emails throughout the day and can set up a time for a phone conference upon request.
Please note that classroom phones do not ring during the instructional periods.

On this page, you can follow along and see what's coming up in class each week.
Coursework is highly individualized, but I will post those skills and activities applicable to all students.
We will take our first monthly ISIP this week. This is an online reading assessment for vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and fluency.
We have begun our new novels and will be continuing our work with plot (particularly the components of the exposition).

We will continue to discuss the benefits of reading and familiarize ourselves with the classroom objectives and procedures.
We will continue to begin our unit on plot elements (fiction).

Student Council - Our advisory had a Student Council Representative visit our class. Packets were passed out to those requesting an application for Student Council. Students have also been instructed to see Mrs. Owens for further questions and information. Deadlines, recommendations, and timelines were fully explained to students and posted in the classroom.
Upcoming Holiday - Friday, September 27 will be a student and faculty holiday - Comal County Fair! :)
Flu Shot Form - These are due September 21, so please make sure you turn yours in if you want your child to have a free flu shot. One was sent home with your child, but if you need another, please email me or the nurse at firstname.lastname@example.org.

iStation - We are all set up and running! Your child will take a monthly ISIP (reading assessment - vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, spelling, and overall reading level).
Labor Day Holiday - There will be no school on Monday, September 3.
