Merry Noel Balcar
Art 1 Teacher
Recreational Reading Teacher
Welcome to Art at New Braunfels Middle School.
Art classes will be taught with emphasis on the elements and principles of design. The elements are line, value, space, form, shape, color, and texture. The principles are unity, contrast, variety, pattern, movement, emphasis, and balance. We will study about artists, cultural arts, and historical art genre. I will encourage critical thinking and creativity as students apply the elements and principles of art to produce drawings, paintings, sculptures, weavings, prints, etc. through a variety of media and methods.
I look forward to getting to know and work with your student this year! Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns!

Sharing is not allowed for students’ health and safety. We will use these supplies on a regular basis!
We always appreciate donations for the art classroom such as clorox wipes, paper towels, tissues, hand sanitizer, quart/gallon baggies, and dry erase markers.
Thank you for your support!!!
The following policies are intended for all to have a safe, creative year in Art. Students are expected to follow the rules of the NBMS Student Handbook in addition to the list below:
Listen while teacher is speaking, use kind words, use calm voices in the classroom, be mindful of others’ work and space, stay in your seat until dismissed, treat others the way you would like to be treated.
Bring supplies daily (pencils!), participate, follow instructions, put your name and class period on work, turn in your work, clean up after yourself, push in stool when you leave.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself, walk in classroom, stay in seat, use tools and supplies carefully and correctly, place items in trash can.
Food and Drinks:
Food and drinks are not allowed during art class.
Absences: If a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get make up work, complete the work, and turn it in. Generally, make-up work will need to be completed outside of class time during tutorials or at home. If time allows, students may have the opportunity to catch up during class.
50% Major Grades (projects that last for several weeks, FINAL products)
40% Daily Grades (participation, daily drawings, introduction, vocabulary)
10% Homework None!!! (I give two free 100s at the beginning of each
9-week grading period instead.)
Grading Continued: In order to be successful in Art you need to follow directions, put your name and class period on projects, and PARTICIPATE! Students are graded on process instead of product. (If you are trying to do your best, you will do well in ART. You do not have to be an expert artist to make a good grade!) Final projects are graded on a rubric which consists of following instructions, completion, effort, creativity, and completing on time.
In classroom students are NOT allowed to have cell phones out during the school day. If a student has a cell phone out, it will be picked up and turned into the office. A parent is required to retrieve the phone from the office.
Students will use iPads for classroom activities, taking pictures, reference photos, research, drawing apps, and listening to music and/or required learning videos with headphones. Students should charge iPads each evening and bring a charger for low batteries.
All students are required to have their own art supplies. (See attached supply list.) Students may keep supplies in their backpack OR may place their supplies in a gallon sized baggie with their name on it and store in the classroom cabinet. If a student runs out of any supply, they will be required to inform their parent/guardian of this need. Students should not share their personal supplies with others. Students need to bring a wooden #2 pencil (not mechanical) every day to class. Students’ grades will be affected if they do not have the appropriate supplies to complete projects. Please contact me if you are in need of assistance with these required supplies.
In addition, we gladly accept any donations throughout the school year for our classroom. Items such as masking tape, tissues, sponges, paper towels, sanitizing wipes, baby wipes, flour, recycled magazines, and various craft items are extremely helpful in the art classroom.
