Update from the Principal regarding the First Day of School
08/22/2020

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year……and of course, thank you for your patience!   I would love to tell you I “have a warm and fuzzy” about all the details for this school year, but we are definitely in uncharted territory, so I am shooting toward that “feeling” for the end of the day Monday.  At the NGC we are emphasizing patience, flexibility, and communication with staff and students while using the crawl, walk, and run method of getting through the first week of IN-PERSON and REMOTE learning.  This email is divided into IN-PERSON and REMOTE sections, so please take your time reading.  Did we miss something?  Probably, but will it get fixed? YES!

Nine years at the NGC has taught us that this generation of student does not normally check their email; they are texters 100%!  I would ask that you assist and encourage your child to check their school emails; communication from their teachers and “CANVAS” will flow through their student email account.

Students who have not completed Online Enrollment Verification (OEV) will not receive a schedule or attend class until the OEV process is complete.

IMPORTANT FOR ALL:  Students who would normally shuttle to or from NBHS from the NGC for extracurricular programs will START and END their day at the NGC.  There will be no shuttles running the first day of school.

REMOTE INSTRUCTION:

  • NGC Teachers are currently reaching out to your remote learner through “Canvas”.  For assistance, go to the NBISD website at www.tec21.org.
  • Remote learners will be receiving emails from their teachers.  Remote learners need to check and use their NBISD email.  (Ninth Graders struggle with this)
  • Students will be able to access their schedules on Monday at 7:00 a.m. through txConnect.
  • Attendance will be taken each day based on student participation in “Canvas". Students must complete teacher assignments each day based on our A/B schedule no later than 11:59 p.m. to count for that day’s attendance.
  • We will follow the regular grading policy as defined in our NBISD Student Handbook, available online at https://www.nbisd.org/page/dis.handbooks

IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION:

  • Arrival: Students must stay in their vehicle until 7:45 a.m. when the cafeteria doors are unlocked. Students may be dropped off anywhere on campus, but they will enter the NGC through the cafeteria doors located on Butcher Street.
  • Students MUST WEAR THEIR MASK as they enter the school building.
  • STUDENT SCHEDULES will be distributed by their ALPHA / last name. Upon arriving, students will find their ALPHA station, receive their schedule, and move to their 1st Period Class.
  • Hallways are marked for student directional movement.
  • Cafeteria: Students must bring a lunch from home or purchase one from the cafeteria. Parents are no longer allowed to drop off a lunch in the front office. This is to minimize front office traffic.
  • Students who selected on-campus learning will receive their iPads during their 2nd Period class. If you would like to purchase the optional NBISD protection plan, more info can be found at nbisd.org/page/tec21.studentpayments
  • School Time:  The school day at NGC starts at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:55 p.m.
  •
